Calabar South to wear a new look - Imoke (13/5/08)

Residents of Calabar South Local Government Area have been assured of the presence of the State Government in order to instill a sense of belonging in them.

Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State disclosed this at a media parley with journalists as a prelude to the celebration of this year’s Democracy Day on May 29, adding that everything towards new development in the area is stated in the budget which also gives the guidelines on what to do.

Imoke said government would embark on the construction of sub stations to improve on the epileptic power supply currently experienced by residents while agreement had been concluded for the expansion of water projects to the area amongst other areas to commence this year at the cost of five billion dollars which will be completed in two years, stating that street lights will also be extended to major streets in Calabar South.

On Health Care programme, the Governor noted that the State is committed to rendering an improved service because of his passion to health care related issues, stressing that 130 health care centres have been renovated, equipped and trained staff assigned responsibilities with the support of the Local Government Councils while the only challenge is the resource personnel to man the facilities as the programme is expected to commence in May.

The Governor explained that under the first phase, all the General Hospitals under construction across the state will be completed and equipped while the General Hospital Calabar will be upgraded to a referral hospital in line with government’s decision of giving more support to the people.

Imoke disclosed that government had awarded contracts for the construction of rural roads across the state to commence in August and by June next year, they will be completed, stating that in the initial stage, two roads will be done in each Local government Area.

He commended the indigenes of the state in the National Assembly for bringing the attention of the Federal Government to the deplorable state of Federal roads in Cross River, saying that if nothing is done on some of the roads this year the state will take over their rehabilitation as done on Calabar – Itu Road.

On Sports, he revealed that N20 million had been released to Pelicans Stars for their accommodation and allowances as government’s support to remain on top of the league.
