Cross River assures Road Safety Commission of Support (13/5/08)

In a bid to ensure that the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) carryout its Constitutional role effectively in Cross River State, Governor Liyel Imoke has reiterated his readiness to support it in order to enhance its operation.

While receiving the Zonal Commander South, Mr. Adei Abu alongside the new Sector Commander to the state, Mr. Taiwo Ebeyin in Calabar recently, Imoke contended that such support shall come in the area of infrastructure and donation of basic needs of the Commission for smooth running adding that, “Empowering Road Safety will lead to preventable death”.

He maintained that the role of the FRSC at sensitizing the road users in the country cannot be over emphasized especially in a State that pursues tourism as its main stay to drastically reduce the rate of accident to the barest minimum.

Imoke added that he had directed the Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Area to make land available for the siting of the commission’s Office in the area to ensure effective coverage of the Central Senatorial District.

He lauded the cordial relationship existing between it and the State and promised to nurture and strengthen it to ensure its sustenance.

Earlier, the Zonal Commander South, Mr. Adei Abu said he was in the State to inspect Road Safety formation under his Command with a view to appraising their level of performance and address any difficulty they might encounter.

He called on the State Government to support the Commission by assisting in opening up new offices in Obudu, Odukpani, Ugep and additional one in Calabar for effective coverage of all the roads in the State and appealed for the provision of an ambulance, patrol vehicle and a towing van.

Mr. Abu commended the State Government in its effort to sensitize the operation of the Command and motor cyclists otherwise known as Okada and promised to collaborate with it in making the roads safe to all users.
