Cross River Initiates Intervention Programmes to Curb Problems in Schools - (23/5/08)
The Cross River State Government has initiated an intervention programme to renovate some primary and post primary schools based on their individual priorities to complement the functions of the Universal basic Education (UBE) of the Federal Government.
The Commissioner for Information, Dr. (Mrs.) Sylvia Atsu disclosed this to newsmen at the end of the weekly state Executive Council meeting Wednesday, adding that the council had directed the Ministry of Education to furnish it with schools that are in dire need of intervention based on areas of priority
Atsu explained that the intervention exercise is targeted at 400 primary and 60 post primary schools, stressing that while government will spend N25 million on each primary school, N50 million is earmarked for each secondary school, saying areas of need to be tackled by government include the provision of boreholes, laboratories, renovation of buildings as well as other infrastructure.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Lands and Housing Mr. Edem Effiom Ekong said the State Government has awarded contract for the building of an administrative block for the State House of Assembly at the cost of N490 million, to impact on the ability of its members.
Ekong disclosed that currently the members do not have a chamber, committee offices or conference room, explaining that the contract which is being handled by Leophina Works Nigeria Limited will be executed k within 12 and 18 months.
He said the block which be a high rise will be erected within the premises of the State House of Assembly while the current office which is a colonial building will be developed into a historical edifice ink line with the state’s tourism thrust, explaining that it was proper to shift the building from the present site because of its scenic nature and location close to Governor’s Office.
The commissioner debunked reports that where the House of Assembly is located is threatened by erosion, saying that the environment is well fortified to accommodate the new building.
