State Government flags off Obudu Urban Renewal Programme (26/5/08)
Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State has congratulated the Nigerian Navy as it celebrates its 52 years of existence since it metamorphosed from the marines.
While addressing officers and men of the navy at the Eastern Naval Command Interdenominational Church Service to mark the 2008 Nigerian Navy week celebration at All Saints (Protestant) Church Akim Navy Barracks Calabar on Sunday, Imoke wished them “Happy Birthday” and prayed it grows from strength to strength because of the critical l role they play in the nation.
Imoke commended them for being part of the State’s blanket security programme and pledged to support and work with them in the interest of the state, adding that there is no greater satisfaction than being called upon to serve which was part of the sermon.
According to Imoke, service is a privilege given by God to some people to serve the nation and people, pointing out that the navy celebration is significant because if also falls in the serve week that marks his first year in office.
The Governor disclosed that with the cooperation of the navy, Cross Riverians have hope both collectively and as people because of its backing while pledging that he and his friends will support the church very hand sorely as well as provide robes to its choir.
The chaplain of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Akim Navy Barracks Rev. Father (Lt.) R. E. Oparaji in his sermon tagged “Let Your Light Shine” or “Arise and Shine”, said political office holders and service men should thank God for giving them the opportunity to serve their fatherland because he created man to add salt to life and any man called to serve has a destiny for the people.
Oparaji enjoined those in service to be holy, disciplined loyal, obedient honest, truthful and available to the people, adding that they should be passionate as Christ was, service oriented, avoid greed, make self a mirror, be patriotic and leave a legacy.
According to him, when one in service leaves a legacy behind, generations unborn will remember him for it, stressing that there is a reward for those that serve the nation well.
The clergy advised men of rank not to be afraid because the same God that gives position will stabilize them while urging them to be in covenant with God.
The first lesson Isaiah 58:7-10 was taken by Governor Imoke and the second lesson Matthew 5:13-16 was read by the Chief Staff Officer, Commodore Aminu O. A. Ikioda (CSO) while they were intercessions for the church, Nigerian Navy at 52, Armed Forces of Nigeria, Nigeria and other nations as well as a minute silence for officers and men who died on their way to Bornu State on their return from Darfur, Sudan.
