House of Assembly assures Acting Governor of Support (17/7/08)
The State House of Assembly has said it is prepared to work with the acting Governor, Mr. Francis Adah in order to ensure smooth function of government machinery.
The Speaker of the House, Chief Dominic Aqua-Edem gave the assurance during an interaction with press men in Calabar recently.
He described the judgment by the Appeal Court nullifying the election of Senator Liyel Imoke as governor of the state as a demonstration of the rule of law and urged Cross Riverians to respect the ruling.
Chief Aqua-Edem said now that the former Speaker has assumed duties as acting governor and he was acting as Speaker of the house, he had no choice than to face the challenges before him and discharge his duties to the best of his ability for the good of the State.
In addition, the state House of Assembly has resolved to stand in total support of Senator Liyel Imoke in the quest to reclaim his position as governor of the state.
This was part of the three-point resolution adopted by the House after deliberating on a matter of urgent public interest brought before it by the member for Ikom-one constituency, Mr. Agbiji M. Agbiji.
The matter in question was the events leading to the swearing-in of the former Speaker of the House, Mr. Francis Adah as acting governor of the state.
While introducing the subject, Mr. Agbiji said the judgement of the Appeal Court marked a watershed and turning point in the history of politics in the state.
Pointing that there were many lessons to be learnt from the current trend of events, particularly as they related to the activities of persons whom he said were out to slow down the wheel of progress in the state.
Members in their various contributions said the nullification of the election of Senator Liyel Imoke as governor would further embolden Cross Riverians to ensure that the PDP reclaimed the governorship position in the fresh election.
They commended Cross Riverians for the matured, manner they received the judgement of the Appeal Court which had demonstrated their love for democracy and respect for the rule of law.
In its resolution, the House also urged the acting governor to rise to the challenge and make Cross Riverians proud in the discharge of his duties.
