African Nations Championship Victory, Imoke Congratulates Super Eagles

Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State has congratulated the Super Eagles of Nigeria for beating the Stallions of Burkina Faso two goals to nil.

Addressing the team at the end of the first leg qualifier of the maiden African Nations Championship at the U. J. Esuene Stadium Calabar Saturday, Imoke hoped with the victory the team would strengthen its formation and progress from match to match and bring the trophy to Nigeria.

Imoke disclosed that the Government and people of Cross River are proud of the crop of Super Eagles which is mainly home based and commended CAF for initiating the tournament which is strictly for footballers based in Africa, adding that it is Government’s desire that their subsequent matches be played in Calabar, being the home of football where the game was first played in Nigeria.

He commended the players for playing well and wished them success in their subsequent matches most especially their return leg match in Burkina Faso in two weeks time.

Responding, the captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Ambrose Efe commended the State Government for sponsoring and hosting the match in Calabar as well as for providing both the players and team officials’ accommodation, assuring him that they will do the nation proud by winning the maiden edition of African Nations Championship.

Efe appreciated Cross Riverians for the huge turn out and the support which they received during the tournament promising that they will come back to Calabar with the cup for celebration.

Spectators at the capacity filled stadium included the Deputy Governor, Mr. Efiok Cobham, members of the State Executive Council and Chieftain of the NFA and the match unveiled Cross River’s determination to be among the six venues to host Nigeria ’07 Under-19 World Cup where the stadium’s score board which was last used in 1999 during FIFA Under-21 World Cup was put back for use during the match.

It also afforded spectators the opportunity to avail themselves of developments made by the State Government to ensure provision of other facilities at the stadium to meet FIFA requirements.
